Your Aberdeen Wedding Photographer

Emerson Photography, Aberdeen wedding photographer, covering all of Aberdeenshire, Stonehaven, Grampian, Perth, Dundee, Inverness, Stirling and Edinburgh.

Thanks for looking in! I'm Jamie and if you're looking for a very experienced, low key, candid wedding photographer, you're in the right place. I won't try to put you in complicated poses but I will (gently!) guide you to help make some gorgeous photographs. I won't make everyone stand in lines or take you away from your guests for ages but I absolutely will put you at your ease and keep everything very relaxed and fun! You might not see a huge amount of me on the day but that's as it should be - the day is all about you and your guests. Most of us really aren't that fussed about having our photos taken and I totally get that - I'll work with you to make sure you never feel uncomfortable. I've been working in this way for well over a decade so I've got quite good at all this stuff!

I do like to keep things very simple. Most couples go for eight hours of coverage for £1280 or ten hours for £1400. This includes all your finished, high resolution photographs made available as a download, as well as a gallery of web sized images for sharing your pictures online. You may print, copy and share your photos as often as you like. All that said, whether you need me for two hours at a castle, or for a two day extravaganza, I can definitely still help so please do get in touch for a chat.

As of Jan 2025, all bookings of eight hours and over also include a free pre-wedding photo session if you'd like one. This can be anywhere within 15 miles of Aberdeen, and it's just a great opportunity to get used to being in front of the camera and taking some gentle direction and posing suggestions. It's also a good time to talk about any worries, ask questions or just to update the family photos! You get to keep all the finished photos and the whole thing should take an hour or so.

Over the years, I've managed to streamline the whole process to make it as easy as it can possibly be! Once you've decided to go ahead, it really is just a signature, a down payment and your date is set in stone. If you'd like to meet up for a coffee and a chat, let me know, or if you're busy, there's always Zoom or Facetime.

Also, I'll happily send you some links to some full wedding galleries - these should give you a good idea of what to expect from Emerson Photography. In the meantime, please do take a second to look at some of my photographs - hopefully the actual images say far more than I ever could in words!

I absolutely encourage all my clients to have their photographs printed. You can do this yourself or I can have a breathtakingly beautiful album made for you from £300. Your photos are printed onto lightly textured, archival quality art paper which just makes them GLOW! This is what photos are made for. Do ask to see some albums - so much better than a USB stick sitting in a drawer...

That's it! No hidden costs, no charging for meetings, calls, travel or anything else. You can add extra hours of coverage on if you like at a cost of £100 per hour. I'd usually expect to deliver between 400 - 600 photographs after a full day wedding - quality not quantity! If that's all beginning to sound like what you might be looking for, please do drop me a quick message - Contact Jamie!

What do I mean by "finished photographs?" Each and every photograph is worked on individually to ensure continuity of light, colour and processing. If you have a look through my Aberdeen Wedding Photography Gallery you'll get a good idea of the way I work. You'll probably have noticed, I produce a lot of black and white work - it's contemporary, timeless and classic all at once! If I could get away with it, I'd shoot whole weddings in B&W but I usually manage to hold myself back...!

Why Choose Emerson Photography?

Good question! Choosing a photographer can seem like an overwhelming task. Why does one cost £500 and another £2800? Can I believe what they say? How on Earth do I make an informed decision?! I always advise clients to start by looking at the photos. It seems blindingly obvious but make sure you like the photographer's work. Is it in the style you want? Ask to see a full wedding (or two) to get a good idea of what to expect.
Here are a few reasons to consider Emerson Photography:

  • Experience. I've been photographing weddings for almost two decades. I've worked in every conceivable type of light from a candlelit cave to a massive, bright orange ballroom. Knowing exactly how to deal with any given situation is a huge help. Knowing my kit inside out leaves me free to get creative with the light, the surroundings, the people and their emotions. I'm not stuck wondering how to deal with strong, orange backlight, or wondering if flickering fluorescent lights are going to ruin my photos!

  • I'm very much a People Person! When it comes to working in a service industry, this is an absolute must. Your photographer really does have to be friendly, approachable, super-efficient, able to solve common issues in an instant and basically just be a nice person to be around! I suppose this is really another "Experience" heading but more to do with people. It's not something that comes naturally to everyone.

  • Longevity and reliability. When choosing a photographer, it's worth making sure they've been doing it for a while. You really don't want to find your photographer has gone back to their day job two years after you booked them for your big day. This is becoming scarily common - it's not just about losing money, it's about rushing about at the last minute, trying to find someone reliable when you should be concentrating on enjoying the lead up to your wedding. Reviews are your friend here - you can google Emerson Photography Reviews to see what my clients think of me.

  • I love photography!! All new wedding photographers are at pains to tell you how passionate they are about their work and most truly are. It's about commitment too though. I was lucky enough to turn my passion into a solid living but it was not easy! I spent four years back at college and then University for a degree in Fine Art Photography, followed by many more years of learning a craft, assisting other photographers, attending workshops and learning not just how to take photographs but also how to run a customer-focussed business. This is most definitely a lifestyle not a weekend job. I continue to learn every single day - it's the least I can do for those who choose Emerson Photography. And most importantly, I still, absolutely adore wedding photography. It offers a creative freedom hard to find in many other lines of work!

How does it work?

First of all, please get in touch to ensure I'm free on your wedding day. After that, to hold your date, I ask for a £250 booking fee with the remaining balance due one month before the wedding. I'll send you out an e-contract and summary of services to sign - this lays out exactly what to expect and really is very basic. I'll also ask you to fill out an online checklist. This takes about ten minutes and includes such details as the timeline for the day, emergency phone numbers etc. And that really is it! This simplicity leaves you free to concentrate on all the other aspects of planning your wedding. I'll then work with you closer to the day to ensure any changes are noted and I'll always be available to help out wherever I can.

Emerson Photography has been hard at work since 2006 and is now based back at home in Aberdeen (2018 onwards!). Mixing a true documentary style with a little heart-felt but dramatic wedding day portraiture is what I do best. It's all about the candid photographs! By that, I don't just mean I'll creep around getting sneaky shots - it's more a case of producing beautifully composed, story-telling images using the light and the surroundings to their full potential. This approach is variously called; documentary, photo-journalistic, non-interventionist etc and literally thousands of photographers claim to offer "unobtrusive" wedding photography but it's actually very hard to pull off convincingly and successfully - it takes a long time to begin to get it right, every single time with every conceivable variable (weather, guests, venue, lighting conditions).

You will still have some group shots if you'd like them (or if your relatives want them!) and I do specialise in natural looking wedding day portraiture, so you absolutely will have some lovely photos of yourselves but I won't make the day all about the photos - it's about the two of you, your families and your friends!
So if you're not so keen on standing in rows all day, grinning for the camera, you're in the right place. If you'd prefer your friends and family to get every second of enjoyment out of your day, rather than standing around in awkward poses for hours, I can help. You can read more about my approach here; How to tell a story and not be seen! Please take a few minutes to look at some of the photos here; Documentary Wedding Photography Aberdeen.

I'm based at the West side of Aberdeen City, so very well placed to travel out into Royal Deeside or up and down the coast. That said, I'm always delighted to go a little further - over the years, I've photographed weddings from London to Tuscany, via many gorgeous Highland weddings.
